Oprah freaks and science seeks a rationale that shall excuse this strange behavior. – Newsboys, “Shine”
When Disney and VeggieTales both feature “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine” in their productions, you know that the song is neutral enough to be positive, but what it’s positive about is up to interpretation.
So, what is this little light?
The Bible speaks of letting your light “shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Okay, sounds simple enough, but what are “good works”? Scripture says elsewhere that “there is none who does good, not even one.” (Romans 3:12) So where are these good works coming from?
God is the One who is light. “There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.” (John 1:9) Jesus, being fully God and fully man, came into the world to live a life of perfect obedience to God. He showed the way to salvation, which is fully trusting in Him and His work of redeeming His people from their sin through His atoning death and resurrection. He then sent the Holy Spirit (also God) to guide His people into a saving knowledge of the Gospel. When the Holy Spirit resides in us, we are transformed into a new creation that is now able to truly do good works.
For God, who said ‘Light shall shine out of darkness,’ is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. -2 Corinthians 4:6 (NASB)
So that little light? That is the majestic power of the Gospel as it transforms a Christian to be conformed into the image of the almighty God. He is truly good. May His gospel shine forth!
